Aww! Mystery cop in viral hoops video comes forward

  • A 'mystery' officer played basketball with a young boy in San Antonio Wednesday
  • The 12-year-old's mom recorded the sweet moment
  • The officer has been identified as Neil Rocha

A "mystery" police officer, whose one-on-one basketball matchup with a San Antonio, Texas, boy went viral, has finally been identified.

On Wednesday, Monica Aguirre saw the officer approach her 12-year-old son Jacob, as the sixth-grader played basketball by himself. The officer, now identified as Neil Rocha, was on his break and joined Jacob for a game of one-on-one.

The entire interaction was caught on camera, and the story was shared Thursday on the San Antonio Police Department's Facebook page, garnering more than 5,000 likes and 330 shares.

Since the sweet moment, Aguirre has been trying to track down the police officer to say thank you for the kind gesture toward her son.

"It's not every day this little life experience (happens) for him. It's huge. It may not mean much, but it's huge," Aguirre told HLN affiliate KENS.

Rocha told KENS that the pickup game was "fun" and a chance to pay it forward. Rocha said it reminded him of his own youth and the New York police officers who stopped to play with the local kids.
